The Vestige series is based on the spinal structure of an adult sea lion. I studied the carcass of this animal during a 4-month period. Every couple of weeks I would drive out to the coast and document the decaying animal. This was at a remote beach on the Washington coast and particularly stunning for its resident pairing of eagles and it’s amazing sea stacks, plus, on a southwest swell the lines of uncrowded surf would turn the ocean into a sea of corduroy. Being able to witness the spine slowly reveled had my mind spinning. I wanted to recreate it, I wanted to translate it and I wanted to celebrate the age and ware of this protected species.
